Aims and Scope

The School “Non-Equilibrium Complex Systems & Transitions: from Brain-to-Climate” (NECST-B2C26) aims to provide a modern and genuinely interdisciplinary perspective on complex systems operating far from equilibrium. Many forms of organization in nature and technology emerge from the coupled action of fluctuations, nonlinear interactions, and multiscale dynamics. The School focuses on the conceptual and quantitative principles that govern these processes and on how order, unpredictability, and adaptability can coexist in open, driven systems

The scope of the School spans a broad range of phenomena, connecting neural computation and cognitive emergence with biological self-organization, atmospheric dynamics, climate variability, and the mechanisms underlying extreme events. By bringing together researchers from physics, neuroscience, climatology, biology, applied mathematics, and related disciplines, the program aims to create a common language across fields and to highlight recurring mechanisms such as self-organization, collective behavior, and information flow in nonequilibrium systems.

In continuity with the tradition of the Ettore Majorana Foundation and the International School on Nonequilibrium Phenomena, special emphasis will be placed on the role of fluctuations across scales, the physics of learning and adaptation, the interplay between classical and quantum dynamics, and the search for unifying frameworks capable of explaining macroscopic organization in biological, ecological, and climatic systems. The School ultimately aims to equip participants with a coherent set of ideas and tools, while fostering collaboration and the development of new theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches to complexity.
